Whether you are looking for a lesson plan on a specific topic or an entire, the following organizations provide educational resources and information relevant to personal finance and economics educators.

Council for Economic Education provides a database of classroom resources including free online lessons, tools and videos. Economics and personal finance topics are easily searchable by concept, standard, grade level, and subject. Many of the lessons include a teacher’s version as well as a student’s version. Each of the lessons are designed to be delivered in a variety of formats and classroom settings. Also available are professional development opportunities for teachers, student programs and family resources.

The FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data) guide takes you through 10 step-by-step activities on FRED®, the free online economic database of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, to show how quickly and easily you can find and graph economic data and save and share them as a custom graph. The FRED® database includes more than 760,000 economic data time series from dozens of national, international, public, and private sources. FRED® allows you to combine and display data with an easy-to-master mix of tools. With just a few minutes of practice, anyone can use FRED® to tell a story using data.

FTE provides a variety of resources for educators, including curriculum outlines and accompanying lesson plans, Hot Topic inquiries into current issues, and an Economic Barometer for easy access to the U.S. federal government’s latest quarterly economic data.  All FTE curriculum resources may be viewed online or downloaded.  Lessons include background information, source citations (linked when possible), readings, and handouts. Activities include teacher guides, materials masters, and video demonstrations.

This online multimedia teaching package features a number of resources to enhance your teaching of core economic topics. Each module includes video content that covers key concepts, with content ranging from informational videos to lectures from economists and master teacher lesson demonstrations. Finally, a resources guide provides links to a number of online tools that supplement the other materials. Use the entire module or select from individual lessons.

  • Format: A voice-over PowerPoint lesson features a narrator speaking over slides. Also available is a SMART Board lesson on the topic. The Test Your Knowledge interactive quiz gauges students’ understanding—and yours—of the lesson.



Podcasts and Videos


The Economic Lowdown is a podcast series produced by the Economic Education department of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank for high school students. The series covers topics in economics, banking, and monetary policy. In the end, they will see how economic principles affect the choices they make in their everyday lives.

These brief videos use clear, simple language and graphic elements so that students can better visualize the economic concepts being presented. In the end, they will see how economic principles affect the choices they make in their everyday lives.
