Celebrating 70 Years

"If Americans are to grapple successfully with problems ranging from the family budget to the national budget, the teaching of economics in schools must be strengthened.  But our schools have been handicapped because too many of their teachers have had too little opportunity to develop their own understanding of economics.

Clearly, an economic workshop for teachers and schools administrators is the first step toward solving the problem of general economic education."

In 1953, with those thoughts in mind, educators, business leaders and representatives of labor and agriculture came together to create the Maryland Committee on Economic Education (now known as the Maryland Council on Economic Education). Seventy years later we are still equipping educators with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to teach economics and personal finance in Maryland's K-12 schools.

MCEE's first workshop on economic education was held on the Goucher College campus in August 1954.  Sixty teachers and administrators from all parts of Maryland attended.

Join us this 2023-2024 school year as we look back through the years and celebrate the millions of students we have impacted throughout the last 70 years.  We will be sharing photos and stories, as well as hosting special events throughout the year.

A special message from University of Maryland System of Maryland Chancellor, Dr. Jay Perman.
